Milk Thistle is native primarily to the Mediterranean, while it is also cultivated in the rest of Europe and in South America. The first references to the plant were made by Theophrastus in the 4th century, e.g. where it was referred to by the name “Pternix“. Then Dioscorides recommends the “Mega Kentayrion”, or “Silybon” for the healing of wounds. Following the quotation from the Elder Pliny, while in the middle ages many herbalists recommend the plant for various uses.

The English botanist Nicholas Culperer proposed as an excellent remedy for the bile and spleen, while at the beginning of the 20th century a school of botanists therapists, so-called “Selective” used milk thistle extract for “Hepatic congestion”.

Finally after 1960s the use of the plant has spread widely, starting from Germany, where at the same time was also being used in research study.
